May 2021 Family Newsletter!
Holy moly, it's May and time for a library update!
STEM Week!
We are celebrating STEM Week this year by partnering with the Creswell Family Resource Center as well as Remake Learning Days to bring you two different STEM Programs. The first is for kids 2-5 and is called Balloon Blasters. We will be inflating balloons using chemical reactions! The second is for elementary-age kids (but older kids can do it too) and is Magnetic Slime. We will be making slime mixed with iron oxide powder!
A big thanks to Remake Learning Days for the mini-grant that helped fund this awesome program!
You can pick up these kits from the library during our normal pick-up times (Monday and Friday from 12 – 6pm and Wednesday from 11am – 7pm). They will be ready for pick up starting on May 3rd. We will be hosting Zoom meetings where you can join in and follow along with step-by-step instructions or you can watch a YouTube video with the same information to complete the project on your own time.
You can sign up for these awesome STEM Week activities here https://forms.gle/wKDSeiignkxeLkac7

Magnetic Slime Zoom meeting will be on 5/14 at 4pm.

May reads for June Book Clubs!
Don’t forget about our book clubs! Each child who signs up and participates will get to keep a copy of the book we read!
Ages 7-10 can join our Book Club for kids where we will be reading The Care and Feeding of a Pet Black Hole by Michelle Cuevas. When Stella Rodriguez visits NASA she is followed home by a black hole that tries to become her pet! We will chat about this book on June 2nd at 5pm via Zoom.
Middle Schoolers will be reading Free Lunch by Rex Ogle. It’s Rex’s 6th-grade year and he doesn’t quite fit in. Rex is judged for his clothes, his meals, and things he hasn’t even done! We will chat about this book on June 8th at 5pm via Zoom.
High Schoolers can join us for Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson. When Enchanted Jones is finally noticed for her singing voice she is excited to be working with superstar Korey Fields until Enchanted wakes up with blood on her hands, no memory, and Korey Fields dead. We will chat about this book on June 29th via Zoom.
Email Nick and nick@creswell-library.org to sign-up for any of these book clubs.
We want to remind everyone about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and how Creswell kiddos age 0-4 can sign up to get a free book delivered to their door every month until they turn 5! Follow this link to the United Way of Lane County landing page and get started reading! http://www.lanekids.org/imagination-library/
Book Review
Our book review this month is Restart by Gordon Korman!
Chase wakes up in the hospital to find that he doesn’t remember anyone around him. The woman there? Apparently, she is his mother. The young man, his brother. It turns out he is also a star athlete and responsible for his middle school winning the state tournament last year! However, things get worse when he tries to attend a meet-up with other kids from his school, who he doesn’t remember at all, and a girl dumps frozen yogurt all over his head. Why would she do that to Chase? What was he like before the amnesia? Who does he want to be now? Does he have a choice?
